Fear of flying course, 6-7 March 2010

Aeroplanes have become a mode of transport that most people take for granted. London, for example, can be reached from Bremen within an hour.Yet there are also people who experience flying as a personal “horror trip”, suffering symptoms such as tachycardia, hyperventilation, and a feeling of not being in control, i.e of being completely and utterly dependent on the pilot. This describes what is commonly known as “fear of flying”, or what psychologists term “aerophobia” or “aviophobia”. To help sufferers, a fear of flying course will be held at Airport Bremen on 6 and 7 March 2010.

The aim of this group course is firstly to show participants how fear of flying can be consciously combated. The second step involves steps to control this phobia. During the two-day course, a variety of psychological strategies for combatting fear of flying will be demonstrated and practised. Aircraft technology is another area that is covered in some depth. This part of the course addresses some elementary questions, for example, How is an aircraft able to fly? Is turbulence dangerous? Are pilots subjected to routine checks? How do I gain control over the feeling of having no control? In a guided session, participants are invited to swap experience with each other. The course will be held in partnership with Airport Bremen. Any participants who so wish may also take part in an accompanied flight to London on Sunday, 7 March.
